Loyola Chicago promoted Drew Valentine to replace departed head coach Porter Moser.

Valentine, 29, becomes the youngest head coach currently in NCAA Division I men's basketball.

He spent the past four seasons as an assistant coach with the Ramblers, helping the team win three Missouri Valley Conference regular-season championships and earn two NCAA Tournament berths.

Loyola Chicago, which reached the Final Four in 2018, knocked off No. 1 seed Illinois to reach the Sweet 16 last month.

Moser was hired as the head coach at Oklahoma on Saturday.

Valentine's promotion was announced Monday night and he was formally introduced as the program's 17th head coach on Tuesday.

"It is with great excitement and enthusiasm that we introduce Drew Valentine as the head coach of our men's basketball program," Loyola athletic director Steve Watson said. "Over the course of his career as both a player and as a coach, Drew had proven that he's a winner who does things the right way. We are extremely proud of the recent success of our program and Drew has played a key role in those accomplishments. He is the perfect person to lead us as we continue to build upon that success as we begin the next chapter of Loyola basketball."

The Ramblers were a combined 99-36 (56-16 MVC) over the last four seasons with Valentine on the staff.

Before joining Moser's staff, Valentine spent two seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater Oakland University from 2015-17. He was a graduate manager at Michigan State under coach Tom Izzo for two seasons before that.

"It is an absolute honor to be named head men's basketball coach at Loyola University Chicago," Valentine said in a school news release. "I'd like to congratulate one of the biggest mentors and role models in my life, Coach Moser, on his new opportunity at the University of Oklahoma. The impact that he has made on this entire University will not forgotten. We will continue to do things the right way, with character and passion! The vision and standard that Coach Moser established will forever remain a part of the culture.

Valentine's brother, Denzel, is a guard for the Chicago Bulls.
